Rather than being discarded, the packaging has been carefully preserved, suggesting that the object itself is cherished not only for the enjoyment it provides but also for the memories it carries. The quiet ritual of lifting the little racer from its box, winding the clockwork mechanism and placing it gently on the road heightens the anticipation before its journey begins.

The suburban backdrop reinforces that sense of expectation. Familiar New Zealand houses rest beneath warm evening light, their geometry softened by long shadows and rich colour. Nothing extraordinary is happening in the street itself, yet imagination transforms the setting. Unchartered Waters carries that same spirit from asphalt to water. Here, a clockwork speedboat leaves a gentle wake across a pond framed by lush foliage and flowering water lilies. Across the water stands an elegant Art Deco home, its clean geometry and distinctive style belonging to much the same era as the toy boat itself. Rather than contrasting with the vessel, the architecture quietly reinforces its period character, creating a scene that feels timeless and complete. Once again, scale gently plays its part. The boat is unmistakably a toy, yet the composition grants it the dignity of a full-sized vessel embarking on an important voyage.

Where Bluebird is filled with anticipation, Unchartered Waters embraces discovery. There is no audience, no obvious destination and no sense of urgency. The little captain appears content simply to head towards the unknown, recalling the freedom of childhood when every pond becomes an inland sea, and every bend in the shoreline promises something unseen. The title itself encourages this reading. Unchartered Waters suggests not only unfamiliar places but also the willingness to venture beyond certainty, where curiosity matters more than maps.

Colour is central to both works. In Bluebird, warm ochres and deep greens create the atmosphere of late afternoon, while the brilliant turquoise racer glows against the subdued surroundings.
