We all start with a blank canvas.

Every artist develops their style. But what is a style? How do we make it our own?
There are ways you can intentionally work on finding your art style, but this might sound overwhelming and scary. I often hear the frustration of artists struggling to find their direction. You may not know where to start or how to find your visual style, but that’s okay! We all start with a blank canvas.
It’s not unusual to wonder how to develop an art style. It’s a slow process that evolves, not a revolution.
It’s about knowing how to explore your artwork and other artistic influences, and this will give you a headstart on developing an art style.
Many artists go through certain stages when developing a style. I experienced this myself.
You can’t go from beginner to expert overnight. Developing my style has taken me 40 years, and I’m always learning.
You can actively participate in finding your art style. It goes beyond having technical skills. It’s about where you take inspiration, how you view the world, and the creative decisions you make.
Try different materials, techniques, and styles and see how they feel. Experiment with something that feels uncomfortable, and embrace the results. They don’t need to be perfect!
Talk to other artists, Sharings caring.

Which artists have influenced your style?
Rita Angus, the Wyeth family of artists, Mid-century design—it seems like every day, I find a new favourite artist.

What mediums do you use?
I’d Love the Mussini Range of oil paints. Yes, they are expensive, but the colours and pigment are fantastic.

Do you have a favourite colour?
Mussini colours have incredible pigments that allow the mixing of striking colours. My favourites are the Blues and greens.

Enjoy the process and the journey. Every painting of mine starts as a quick study in my sketchbook.
