Uncertain Outcome captures a moment suspended between awe and apprehension, an image that feels both cinematic and deeply personal. It is also the first painting in the series to introduce Märklin’s Viktoria Passenger Steam Ship, an arrival that feels both deliberate and symbolic. At first glance, the viewer is drawn to the scene’s vastness. A dark, towering mass of cloud rises across the horizon, its deep greens and charcoal tones swelling into the sky. Within that looming atmosphere, a surge of golden light breaks through, illuminating the cloud’s contours and hinting at possibility without dispelling the tension. This interplay between light and shadow shapes the emotional force of the work and gives weight to its title.

Positioned to the left of the composition, the Viktoria sails across a calm but expansive sea. Its scale is modest against the monumental sky, reinforcing a sense of vulnerability. Yet the ship remains poised and steady, holding its course with quiet determination. In this first appearance, the toy steamship becomes more than an object. It becomes a character, a symbol of resolve set against the uncertainty of the natural world.

The Viktoria itself is a marvel of its time. First produced in the 1920s and briefly reissued in the 1980s, it reflects an era when engineering and imagination worked hand in hand. Constructed with a metal hull and superstructure, it carries a satisfying solidity. The finely detailed assemblies, from cranes to lifeboats, reveal the care invested in their design. There is a reverence in the way these details are painted, each element honoured as if it were full scale rather than miniature. The built-in windup motor, capable of powering both propellers, and the movable rudder speak to the ingenuity embedded in this clockwork toy. With the simple turn of a key, it could once glide across water under its own mechanical will. That sense of contained potential resonates strongly within the painting.

As painting number sixteen in the series 1 in 100, Uncertain Outcome marks a turning point. It represents the decision to move into full-time painting, a step filled with both ambition and risk. The atmosphere of the work reflects this personal crossroads. The looming clouds suggest doubt and the possibility of failure, while the golden light pushing through them offers quiet reassurance. The future is not clearly defined, but neither is it entirely obscured.

The sea remains calm beneath the dramatic sky, creating a space of balance. The Viktoria continues forward, small yet steadfast. In presenting this ship for the first time, the painting also reveals the artist at a pivotal moment, choosing to sail into open waters without a guaranteed destination.

In the end, Uncertain Outcome is a painting about courage. It acknowledges the weight of uncertainty while embracing the act of moving forward. The horizon is distant, the sky unsettled, but the ship advances. That steady progression, against all odds and without assurance, defines both the subject of the painting and the spirit in which it was created.
